high heels and lads' mags

here's a great article about the pros and cons of high heels from a feminist perspective. next year we will be using high heels as a case study for OBJECTS OF DESIRE as an exam topic. think about? if you're a woman, do you wear high heels? why? why don't men wear high heels?

and here's an article about a feminist campaign against lads' mags. this article addresses ideas about DISCOURSE, MODE OF ADDRESS,  and IDEOLOGY.

why we need feminism

here's a tumblr page of images of students expressing their ideas on why feminism is still vital today.

and here's a fantastic article written by a 17 year-old feminist in the guardian about what happened to her when she started a feminist society at her college.

think about: do you think feminism is still relevant? what can we do about the issues they raise? why are people so 'anti-feminist'?

gender roles in the simpsons and young feminists letting the side down

here's a great article by comedian david mitchell in the guardian about homer simpson, and the portrayal of men and women on television. really useful for NARRATIVE (character roles) as well as MODE OF ADDRESS and DISCOURSE (does the fact that it's a comedy, a cartoon, make it more acceptable...?)

and here's a controversial take on 21st century feminism from the independent. really useful for when we begin looking at FEMINISM in depth next year. think about: what is the writer upset about? do you agree with her? also, read the comments thread below the article for some interesting debate which is quite critical of the writer...

feminism in 21st century music

here's a complex but brilliant article from alternative culture website the quietus about radical feminism and pop music. it includes a number of clips of music videos and performances dealing with issues of gender equality.

this is perfect for the coursework module for a2, and also a really good way to start thinking about FEMINISM.

would you class yourself as a feminist?

what do you see as the main issues facing women in the 21st century?

do female pop stars and musicians have a role to play in challenging our assumptions about what it is to be female in the 21st century?
